Description

The Simpósio Musica Monialium: A Música no Mosteiro de São Bento da Avé-Maria do Porto took place on July 5, 2024, at the Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis in Porto. This event was part of the AVEMUS project and aimed to shed light on the rich musical legacy of the former Monastery of São Bento da Avé-Maria. Bringing together distinguished scholars and musicians, the symposium featured contributions from Pablo Sotuyo Blanco (UFBA - Brazil), Matilde Olarte Martínez (Universidad de Salamanca - Spain), Ricardo Bernardes (Casa de Mateus - Portugal), Marco Brescia (CESEM – FCSH), João Vaz (CESEM, IPL), Maria Luísa Garcia Caldas (CESEM – FCSH), and Mauro Chantal (UFMG - Brazil). Through lectures and discussions, participants explored the unique characteristics of the monastery's musical heritage, its connections to broader historical and cultural contexts, and the extraordinary technical and artistic achievements of its musician nuns. The symposium offered an invaluable opportunity for academics, musicians, and the public to engage with this remarkable chapter of musical history.
