Picturebooks and intercultural citizenship education

Description

This workshop will take a critical look at citizenship as the content for language learning in a primary context (ages 8 to 10 years old). Divided into three parts, the workshop will begin with a clarification of three concepts: intercultural communicative competence, citizenship education and intercultural citizenship education. The second part of the workshop will demonstrate a short unit of work which has been developed around an education for intercultural citizenship in a foreign language classroom through the use of a carefully selected picturebook. This will involve the participants in participating in and reflecting on some of the activities. The final part of the workshop will involve the participants in analyzing the sequence of activities, with a view to better understanding a proposed picturebook selection criteria, as well as a checklist for planning activities around this picturebook.
