Description

Is it something in us or we as a whole that becomes ill when we become mentally ill? For Aristotle it is the thymos that becomes ill, each psuchē's "self" can become melancolic, addictive, angry, madly in love, euforic. The thymos (centre of emotions and sensations) as an infinite horizon within "something", outside of which nothing makes sense. Human beings, for Aristotle, live in a thymic or psychic atmosphere (environment, surroundings) in which "despair" (dys-thumia), "dismay" or "lack of courage" (a-thumia) occur together with cheerfulness or euphoria (eu-thymia). We will then try to compare our sketch with the contemporary, scientifically based view of manic-depressive illness as presented by one of its leading experts. From this comparison, it should be clear that philosophers have much to learn from scientists. After all, scientists have the same preoccupations as philosophers.
