Presentation of the CESEM’s Early Music Studies Research Group work at the Noite Europeia dos Investigadores 2018:
This year the group of Estudos de Música Antiga at CESEM/NOVA-FCSH will focus on showing the variety and complexity of the musical sources on which the researchers work. This will be undertaken through different approaches, including a look on notational particularities (on manuscripts copied in the Middle Ages on parchment conveying a specific types of musical signs called ‘neumes’), codicological details (how the study of paper helps music historians), contextual uses in urban environments (so to highlight the relationship between the city and the music in the Early Modern era), and performance practice (through musical performances with period instruments that will bridge the gap between the written sources and its rendition).
