Musical Continuities between the Cantigas de Santa Maria and the Cancionero Musical de Palacio (MS-II-1335)

The repertoire of the Cantigas de Santa Maria (from now onward CSM) is found in three manuscripts which contain altogether more than 400 songs. The CSM are among the most important musical sources of devotional para-liturgical songs from the 13th-century Iberian Peninsula. Research already demonstrated a very close musical and textual connection between the virelai, the most common musical structure present in the CSM, with the Renaissance vilancico. Few scholars (Ferreira, Preciado among others) investigated if that connection also involved more musical elements (melodies, rhythmic patterns in common) or even contrafacta. But until now little is known about the musical influence of the CSM on later musical production in Iberian Peninsula.
This paper presents the results of a systematic research of these musical elements of the CSM on an important source of the Renaissance vilancico, the Cancionero Musical de Palacio (MS-II-1335). This manuscript contains the most extent Iberian collection of vilancicos, spreading from the late 15th-century until the 1530’s. That fact allows to apprehend what were the main musical characteristics of the vilancico during that period.
The methodology applied is based on the use, for the first time, of a new digital tool, the Lisbon Cantigas de Santa Maria Database. This database was constructed to search for musical elements in the CSM, elements as melodic contours, intervals and rhythmic patterns. The innovative view of this work is the combination of a powerful tool, a database, with a comparative musical analysis that can show some new data concerning this specific repertoire and can be transposed to another musical contexts, like of the trouvères music or the medieval musical sequences.
