Description
Abstract: Until the end of the 15th century, the German presence in Portuguese territory was mainly based on the arrival of merchants from the Hanseatic League, mercenaries, as well as some craftsmen. However, the news of the opening of the Cape Route to India by Vasco da Gama's fleet, which arrived in Calicut in 1498, immediately aroused the interest of the powerful trading houses of Southern Germany. Attracted by spices and other oriental riches, the Augsburg and Nuremberg companies were, in the first place, the ones which were decisively involved in the overseas trade of the Portuguese Crown, sending their representatives to Portugal. With the settlement of these businessmen in Portuguese lands, the German colony of Lisbon grew considerably. In this city, Upper German merchants organized themselves into trading offices and, like the other members of the colony, into confraternities. In the Portuguese capital, a large group of the German community, at the turn of the 15th to the 16th century, was made up of artillerymen, especially bombardeiros who were highly appreciated in Portugal. A large part of these men of war were included in the elite corps of “bombardeiros da nómina”.
