Fish in Portuguese monastic institutions in the 18th century: a micro-history approach to records and consumption in an urban convent (1714-1716).

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

Portuguese monastic expenses books can be a primary source of data collection about fish consumption in the early-modern period. These types of records are usually organized yearly and record monthly information about the fish that was bought for that community. Although some records are generic, others inform about the fish species that were bought, their quantity and their price and, in some cases, information about their size and quality. These records encompass mainly small scale fisheries and common local fish resources that are recognized on long-term consumption patterns, but lacking a quantitative approach. In this presentation we aim to address the potential of these sources for the study of marine resources extractions and local consumption (patterns), by presenting the case study of the fish consumption records of an urban Jesuit religious house in Porto between 1714 and 1721
