Description
It was in search of "Christians and spices', people and trade, the Portuguese turned to the East in the fifteenth century. After the open doors, the turnout in European force would be only a matter of time.Throughout the nineteenth century the European colonial presence reached an extension and intensity previously unknown. Even before the better known "Scramble for Africa" in the second half of the twentieth century, had begun a 'Race to Asia. "Launched by the British, was then followed by other countries, had an impact on the political geography, human and economic location, but also about other old powers were present, as that Portugal had to reconsider its presence.
The development of this colonization in Asia during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries embraced diverse forms according to the structures of power each. Led, however, to a reaction site also performed in different ways (passive resistance combating revolutionary) that sooner than in Africa, leading to decolonization.
In this Encounter it is intend to reflect on colonies located in Asia in the context of colonial exploitation that Europeans developed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, comprising several elements, such as human and social issues, the economy, politics, foreign relations etc.. Likewise, it is considered desirable to contribute to a better understanding of the links between these spaces and the wider colonial context, each country or links to other states.
