Abstract:
Introduction: Maternal voice plays a key role in maternalfoetal interactions (Carvalho et al., 2019). Singing during pregnancy increases the levels of oxytocin and reduces levels of cortisol (Wulff et al., 2021). Breathing during singing is hampered with gestational stage.
Research questions:
1. Can tailored singing exercises reduce voice changes associated
with pregnancy?
2. Does the quality of the mother’s voice matter for perceptions of
mental health during pregnancy?
3. Does the quality of the mother’s voice matter for perinatal
maternal-foetus bonding?
Methods: Comparative longitudinal study: with normal pregnancy.
Group 1 (vocal training): blended-learning individual and group singing lessons based in tailored breathing and singing exercises to enhance mother’s voice
phonatory function and subglottal voice level.
Group 2 (music therapy) to promote wellbeing and facilitate mother-foetus bonding through group singing and song writing for the unborn infant
Results:
- phonatory function : MPT significantly increased for group 1 post-intervention
(tailored singing exercises)
- Perceived perinatal maternal-foetal bonding higher for group music therapy post-intervention (not significant differences)
- Participants in group of music therapy showed a tendency to increase perceptions of mental health during pregnancy, while participants of vocal training group seem to slightly increase perceptions of depression, anxiety and
stress during pregnancy.
- Strong positive correlation between phonation type and maternal-foetal
bonding suggest a less breathy voice can increase sensations of body vibrations, especially in humming vocalisations.
