Description
Digital technologies, here perceived as musical sources, have transformed music creativity but, just as the digital tools assisting sound production rapidly develop, they are also themselves quickly rendered obsolete and, occasionally, no longer readable. This thus represents a highly problematic issue for archives, raising questions including: how to translate composers’ thinkings behind live electronics into Max MSP Patches? In a collaborative work between composers and sound projectionists, considering their artistic options, what are the performance implications? How to archive creative processes in ways facilitating the future performance of works? According to the Italian composer Adriano Guarneri (b. 1947), live electronics constitute an instrument fundamental to the elaboration and spatialization of sound. The way he structures his live electronics seems fully integrated into his live instruments. In 2014, Guarnieri collaborated with Tempo Reale, a research centre founded by the composer Luciano Berio, on the work Lo stridere luttuoso degli acciai, to translate his live electronic outputs into Patches using Max MSP.My goal involves preserving the electronic component of Guarnieri’s work but the methodology necessarily requires analysis of both the creative process and the performative dimension and understanding how they interrelate. Therefore, I correspondingly document the construction of the Max MSP patch architecture, based on Guarnieri’s thinking, to understand the collaborative work between the composer and Tempo Reale, the various artistic decisions and their effects on the performance. Furthermore, grasping the Tempo Reale creative processes in performing Guarnier’s live electronics sections through performative analysis and documentation procedures, thereby considering the ephemerality of digital technologies and their archival challenges, is crucial to better preserving this work and enabling its future performance.
