D. Carlota Joaquina e a Real Ordem de Santa Isabel: a criação de redes de solidariedade feminina

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

This paper proposes an analysis of the Royal Order of Saint Isabel as an instrument for consolidating female solidarity networks centred around Queen Carlota Joaquina. Focusing on the appointments made by its founder, the study seeks to ascertain the extent to which the selection of particular ladies aimed at securing strategic support for her political cause.
Through a prosopographical cross-referencing of the appointed figures with the protagonists of the Conspiracy of the Fidalgos (1805–1806), as well as with the involvement of their relatives and descendants in the Portuguese Civil War, this research aims to determine whether the Order functioned as a means of aristocratic mobilisation in support of a conservative political project. This study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of female honorary orders as platforms of sociability, loyalty, and influence within the political sphere of the Ancien Régime and the nascent liberal order.
