Description
The Content-and-Language-Integrated-Learning (CLIL) approach has arisen in Europe to foster the learning of foreign languages (FL), which are used/learned within the authentic environment of non-language classes. The selection of English as the CLIL target language has been increasing and “occupied” CLIL implementation in many countries and schools (Lasagabaster & Sierra, 2010; Lin, 2016). This led Dalton-Puffer (2011) to rename CLIL as “CEIL” (Content and English Integrated Learning). To contribute to motivating other FL education, in 2020, the ECML project “CLIL LOTE (Languages Other Than English) transitions” emerged, aimed at developing recommendations for implementing CLIL in LOTE across educational stages, both in the language classroom and in other subjects. Since 2021 different expert groups have been working on portfolios, guidelines for the curriculum, the collection and design of teaching materials, among other things. This presentation shows the process of adaptation/contextualisation to develop materials in Italian and Portuguese, based on “A Pluriliteracies Approach to Teaching for Learning. The Process of Corrosion Materials for novice learners” (available in the ECML website). Within the Pluriliteracies perspective (Coyle & Meyer, 2021), both the original and developed resources entail a progression of skills enabling learners to build up their subject knowledge – in more than one language – which becomes increasingly more complex; they can then move from the novice level to the intermediate and advanced ones. The new materials are aimed at intermediate/advanced students, that is, learners of the 7th to 10th grade subject syllabi (12-15 years) with an intermediate FL knowledge. The educational activity in Italian will be implemented in a vocational school in Slovenia where Italian is the students’ L3; the one in Portuguese in a school in France where Portuguese can be the home language for some students. A pilot questionnaire will be administered to students and teachers (at the beginning of this year in the Slovenian school; in a moment to be defined in the French school) and results will provide information about how 57 to improve the material itself, how to articulate it with the curriculum, and also in terms of educational practices for the transition from younger/lower levels.Period | 28 Jun 2023 |
