Between Royal Duty and Religious Devotion: Princess Joana of Portugal and the Dominican Convent of Aveiro

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

This paper explores the life and afterlife of Princess Joana of Portugal in the fifteenth century. Her afterlife in the female convent of Jesus in Aveiro, Portugal, is transmitted through texts, artworks, and a chant cycle preserved in a liturgical book from the convent. These sources provide insight into how a specific cult emerged despite the absence of an official beatification and continued for an extended period. They also illustrate how her sanctity was commemorated within this Dominican community through newly composed chants and prayers that emphasized her virtues.
