An integrated methodology for contemporary music heritage: A focus on Mediterranean performing arts assets

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

Preservation of cultural heritage is a significant concern shared by countries worldwide in today's globalised world. Throughout history, migration, social practices, and cultural expressions have combined to create complex artistic manifestations. This is particularly evident in Mediterranean countries. While certain nations may lead in the preservation, valuation, and reuse of performing arts-related materials, there's an opportunity to glean insights from their less successful approaches by (1) developing cutting-edge methodologies suitable for contemporary music's complex assets and (2) creating a system to help institutions value and reuse those assets. Our objective is to present a strategic framework for research, management, and curation, proposing a novel model designed for practical usability that can be integrated into future processes of archives digitisation, organisation, and documentation. We also address the integration of documentation with contextual information and explore methods for producing supplementary materials to enhance the value and reusability of these resources. Our aim is to recover assets, restore materials (including manuscripts, images, obsolete sound carriers, etc.), establish links between different documents, and consolidate all information in a digital archive. This will facilitate the future restaging of performing arts works. Drawing from our experience in Portugal, which can be adapted to other countries, we have developed a set of services with well-defined methodologies. These services encompass material recovery and treatment, digitisation and restoration, and the creation of 'artwork dossiers'. The outcomes of our efforts will facilitate the restaging of performing arts works, grant researchers access to assets, provide recommendations to policymakers and cultural institutions, and foster the production of documentaries or other culturally related media products. Case studies involving Portuguese and Italian assets will be presented, and we propose extending these initiatives through cooperation protocols with other countries.
