A Brief History of the Catalan procés sobiranista

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

Spanish voters go to the polls on 28 April 2019, after a three – year turbulent political period: a long process of government formation; corruption-ridden scandals of the governing conservative party, Partido Popular; no confidence vote in 2018 that led to the formation of the socialist (PSOE) coalition government; constitutional crisis provoked by Catalonia`s independence process and its unsuccessful handling, and last but not least, the unexpected rise of the far-right party Vox. This party promises to revert most progressive social policies. All major political parties, left and right, air publicly their internal disagreements.

While incendiary rhetoric of Vox and unabated passions related to Catalonia’s independence process mark political debates, everyday life is affected by economic challenges: although the macroeconomic figures show positive signs, many Spaniards fail to feel this progress in their lives.

Which issues really matter to the Spanish voters?
